HP Z3100 Over the years
I've learned to calibrate this unit to maintain consistent output. Consistent
enough that I generally only need to make a single print rather than 2-3
and dialing in to a target like I had to on my previous printers. I would
then setup for a printhead replacement, but just remove each printhead and
clean it thoroughly. 90% of the time this would work and has been enough
for over 6 months. But now the problem has returned and I cannot figure
out how to fix it.

Here
are a few things I've done in my attempt to correct this so far; I bought on eBay the 440 page service manual (which I later found available for free here <z3100users.wikispaces.com/Z3100+docs>). In the manual I found that this problem may be due to the star-wheel assembly allowing the paper to be too close to the print heads. I learned that the aluminum track that holds the starwheels in front of the print area moves up and down and that it could be adjusted if it was too high or low. It appears that I have an early version of the printer that does not have the adjustment tabs at the end of the track. I was able to remove the track, inspect and clean it and return it. I later discovered that the printer moves this up and down and in a calibration test it showed that the range of movement or it's maximum position was "out of range" at 3628EU (EU?) from a standard of 3000-3600. Does anyone know how this can be fixed or adjusted? I am not seeing star-wheel tracks on my prints which is another common problem with these printers, but not mine. left side mount of starwheel track. No adjustment tab, not "soft" washer under hard washer as shown in service manual. right side of starwheel track, again no adjustment tab. Screw attaches to piston which raises and lowers with gears. Replaceable, but requires significant disassembly of printer to access. Adjustable? Not as I could find. I see in the manual that the lift mechanism can be replaced, but requires significant disassembly of the printer to access it. While I'm willing to spend some money purchasing parts and even replacing all of the printheads ($330 form B&H) if that will likely fix the problem I am trying to avoid a service call if it will not be clear to a service tech what needs to be done. In my experience service techs will either clean the existing equipment or start replacing whole sections until the problem is resolved. This can quickly get very expensive. If it will require major maintenance such as replacing the spittoons I would like to have an idea of the potential cost in advance. That said I am currently trying to print a pair of 30x40 murals for a client but expect to soon be printing 2 tradeshow displays consisting of 3-4 panels each of 36" wide images up to 100" long. I need to resolve this as quickly as possible, but again not at any cost. Some additional information which may or may not be a factor in this issue; The printer is in my office next to my work desk and is attached via a Ethernet network cable and has it's own IP assigned. This is a PC based network and all of the 3 computers I use with it in my office are running Windows 7 Pro x64. I have upgraded the firmware to TR12-TR_7.0.0.3 I use only OEM paper and ink printing about 60% on Instant Dry Gloss (Q7995A), 20% on Satin Professional (Q8840A) and the rest a mix of other HP media. I have been using the 2 primary paper stocks almost exclusively since this issue first arose at the beginning of this year (Jan/Feb 2011). All examples shown here are on 44" Satin Professional. I only use OEM ink although sometimes they expire while in the printer and I do not replace them as I do not believe that the expiration dates are an issue and I don't use very old cartridges. I use Photoshop CS5.1 and print using the Z3100 profile for the given media. I also monitor ink levels with the HP Utility program, allowing the printer to manage color. Each time I switch paper I do a color calibration. At this point I am planning to replace all of the printheads and the starwheel track, hoping that the newer version with the tabs is compatible for a total cost of about $500. Please let me know if you have suggestions or fixes and I will post them here for others to use as well. Thanks.
