The newly released film (01/10) Youth in Revolt
starring Michael Cera, Portia Doubleday, Steve Buscemi & Ray Liotta is set
in Northern Michigan.
Below you can see photos as I shot them and assembled them plus shots of the
murals on the studio set in Madison Heights, Michigan.
Several of the scenes in this film include interiors of a mobile home
trailer set in a vacation trailer park near Traverse City Michigan. I was
hired by the production company to shoot a nearly 360 degree view around the
placement of the trailer (an empty pad) and produced a 100' long by
18' tall mural which was used in the studio for shots that included views
out the window of the trailer.
I promised the art director who hired me that
these shots would not be made public until the movie was widely released. As
always, I am considerate of the needs of my clients and am grateful to the
producers for the opportunity to shoot the mural on the set during filming.
I won't go into the technical details on how these were produced nor the
equipment I used except to say that I used a variety of wide angle lenses
with a full sized sensor body and a special pano rig.

I shot through out the day to capture the light from different directions.
Multiple shots were assembled as a single wide view pano image which I then
retouched to even the exposure range between shadows and highlights, remove
some items and drop in additional lampposts I shot separately.

The original plan was to produce these on a special printer capable of
outputting up to 192" wide (16'), but the production designer decided that
18' tall would be better and we would need to output in sections, both
vertically and horizontally.

Final file sizes were 42000x7560px at 35ppi (100'x18'), that was cropped
down and rezed up from a working file of 23567x5368 @300ppi. Having a 1TB
RAID 0 swap file drive certainly helped manage the 2.1GB file.
Shots on the set show the scale and distance from the trailer with top lit
(front lit) diffusion for illumination.

I have placed a grey block over some of the crew members as I agreed I would
not show any shots of actors or production crew.
For those here because of the film a small bit of trivia;
several of the production company including the director made cameo
appearances during the filming (as police officers and illegal immigrants).
You can see their names in the full cast list of characters on
IMDB.com's entry for the film (although I cannot confirm this is true).
You'll also see there that I was not credited. I am also not the John Lacy
credited in Clint Eastwood's Gran Torino also filmed in Michigan, although
several friends and family called me when they saw my name in the credits at
the theatre (which surprised me how many people actually read the credits).
